In a single-phase application, a single external conductor can be used. In a three-phase cable, these colors are typically assigned to the three outer conductors.

Why mixing them up can be dangerous

Green-yellow remains untouchable

A socket with earthing contact, a lamp with a conductive housing or a device in a damp area depends on correctly implemented protective measures. If the protective conductor is missing, you cannot simply put the neutral conductor or another wire in its place.

This also applies if an older installation previously seemed to have worked without any problems. A missing PE is not a minor cosmetic defect, but rather an indication of a situation that needs to be professionally assessed. The PEN conductor in the existing system

What you can prepare yourself

When moving out, you can disconnect electrical devices from the mains by pulling out the plug on the plug housing and not on the cable. You can roll up cables neatly, protect sensitive plugs and document which device was on which connection. Switching off a fuse is a sensible safety measure, but it does not automatically make you the person authorized to carry out installation work.
