Planning a move Schedule: The realistic CH timetable

Planning a move Schedule in Switzerland: Weekly and daily checklists, deadlines for authorities and tenancy law, packing plan and scheduling with TIXPI.

Planning a move Schedule: The realistic CH timetable

Anyone planning a move in Switzerland should start the schedule by three months before the moving dateat the latest. Registration at the new place of residence must take place within14 daysand the postal forwarding order should be activated at leastfour working daysbefore the move.

The situation is typical: the rental agreement has been terminated, the new key date has been set, but suddenly A cleaning company, a transporter and a clear process are missing. This is exactly when it becomes clear whether the move is planned or is just supposed to take place somehow. A resilientPlanning a move Scheduledoes not count forward from the moving day, but backwards from the hard deadlines.

Why a well-thought-out schedule is crucial in Switzerland

A family of four from Bern gives notice in March and plans to move in June. Offers are collected in April and packing begins in May. Shortly before moving in, however, registration with the new community is missing. Transport and key dates are fixed, but administration, school, cleaning and residents' control follow different deadlines.

Such bottlenecks arise because a move combines several independent dates. For rental apartments, the notice period is often three months to a local termination date. Anyone who misses this requirement or the deadline in the rental agreement risks a longer rental period and possibly double rent. The termination must therefore be at the beginning of the planning, not just when looking for a van.

The three deadlines that determine backwards

  • Cancellation:The written termination must be received by the landlord in good time. The desired moving date only fits if it matches the termination date and rental agreement.
  • Registration:After moving in, registration with the new residential community within14 daysis required. De-registration at the old place of residence must also take place within this period, as theUnterlage zur Anmeldung und Abmeldung der Einwohnerkontrollestipulates.
  • Forwarding:Swiss Post's forwarding order should be activated at leastfour working daysbefore the move. It forwards letters, but does not replace direct information to banks, insurance companies, employers and other contractual partners.

Practical rule:The moving day is the end point of the plan, not the starting point.

Anyone who misses the registration causes additional administrative work and, depending on the municipality, has to face consequences. Late termination can trigger additional rental costs. If there is no clear documentation when the apartment is handed over, it will be more difficult to clarify damages and the refund of the deposit may be delayed.

TheMobilitätsstatistik des BFSshows that changing apartments occurs frequently in Switzerland. In 2024, around 9.3% of the population changed their place of residence, about697,000 people. On average, this corresponds to approximately 1,900 moves per day. The rate was also 9.3% in 2023, 9.5% in 2022 and 10.3% in 2020. The average distance was13.4 km in 2024. Local moves also need coordinated bookings and clear handovers.

TheSchweizer Umzug-Checkliste als PDF helps with personal planning of termination, registration, forwarding and handover. The lead time required depends on the type of move. A single piece of furniture can often be organized at short notice, a family apartment requires more coordination, and an office requires additional consideration for operations, IT and employees.

The 12-week timetable up to one week before the move

The following process begins with the cancellation logic and works its way up to the last week of preparation. It is suitable as a basic framework, but must be adapted to the size of the apartment, family, distance and personal contribution.

Weeks 12 to 10

First, the old apartment is terminated in writing. Check when the landlord must receive the notice of termination, which local deadline applies and whether the rental agreement contains any special requirements. At the same time, the deposit, handover conditions and any search for a new tenant are on the task list.

The financial framework is then defined. Compare self-direction, van rental and moving service providers. A rough inventory list is sufficient at this point, but it should already contain bulky furniture, basements, floors and sensitive items. AUmzug-Budgetvorlagecan help with the budget overview.

Week 9 to 8

Now you get offers from at least three moving companies. Compare not only the final amount, but also the hourly rate, minimum duration, assembly, insurance, floors, elevator, no-parking zone and possible surcharges. A seemingly cheap offer becomes expensive if important services are later billed separately.

Clarify the access at the same time. In cities like Zurich, Bern or Basel, no-parking zones, access permits and limited courtyards can have a greater impact on the process than the pure driving distance. During this phase, families also secure kindergarten or school places in the new location.

Week 7 to 6

The new rental agreement is signed and the landlord's confirmation is requested. Inform insurance companies about the new address and clarify whether household contents and liability insurance need to be adjusted. If you are bridging pets, plan transport, care and a quiet transition zone instead of exposing the animal to noise on bridging day.

Week 5 to 4

As soon as the date and volume have been determined, the transport will be booked. You also place the forwarding order at the post office in this phase so that the processing time of up to four working days does not become a short-term risk. Start the detailed inventory, sort out and, if necessary, reserve an appointment for the removal of bulky goods.

Week 3 to 1

The cleaning is organized three weeks before the moving date. Decide whether a company will offer an offer or whether a binding cleaning plan will be drawn up with helpers. Two weeks in advance, the forwarding address is checked with banks, insurance companies, employers, schools and other contractual partners.

In the last week you pack a preparation box with tools, documents, chargers, medication, toiletries and food. Read the water supply at the old location and have keys, handover documents and meter documentation ready to hand.

The hot phase four weeks before the moving day

The abstract planning ends four weeks before the move. Now a rough estimate must become a reliable list. Each apartment is recorded room by room, including the basement, attic, balcony and storage areas. Write down furniture dimensions, dismantling needs, sensitive parts and items that are not allowed in the van.

Week 4

Complete the detailed inventory and create a room-by-room list. Later, label each box with the target space and contents. Boxes for books, dishes and heavy items should be smaller and sturdier, while clothing boxes are used for hanging clothes.

This week you'll buy the basics:Clothing boxes, dish paper, labels and markers. Also get enough tape and protective material. Too little material means that you end up with open boxes, unprotected glasses and illegible labels. The first boxes with books, seasonal clothing and rarely used decorations can now be packed. You can find practical information about the material hereVerpackungsmaterial für den Umzug.

Ein hilfreicher Zeitplan für den Umzug, der die wichtigsten Aufgaben von vier Wochen bis zum Umzugstag darstellt.

Week 3

Measure the critical furniture and access points in the new apartment. This is particularly important in old buildings in Zurich or Bern, where deep door frames, narrow stairwells and winding platforms can prevent a sofa or cupboard from being transported. A piece of furniture that does not fit through the entrance should be identified before the booking date.

Coordinate with the moving team where which piece of furniture should be placed. Also confirm the cleaning and report bulky waste. If you need temporary accommodation for helpers or fitters, you can useMonteurzimmer Peine 2026 buchen as an organizational supplement, provided that the assignment does not end at your place of residence and an overnight stay is required.

Week 2

Furniture that is no longer needed on a daily basis is now dismantled. Screws come in labeled bags and are attached to the respective furniture. Keep sorting out, but don't start any more big renovation projects. The schedule needs available hands for moving logistics.

Week 1

Pack the final boxes in a controlled manner and update the order based on the actual box and furniture list. This final quantity check makes sense with a service provider like TIXPI because additional furniture, different access or assembly work can change the process.

The moving day does not start with packing. In the last week, sleep, food, key handover and parking permits are prepared. The evening before, only the essentials remain open, such as the refrigerator, bathroom and personal travel items.

Moving day and the first 48 hours afterwards

On moving day, the order counts. The moving company usually arrives between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m.. Before the first piece of furniture is placed, the access and parking space must be clear, tools must be ready and the walkways must be protected. Furniture is then dismantled, heavy items are loaded first and boxes are sorted according to a predetermined numbering.

The handover of the keys to the old apartment must not be lost between two transport tasks. Rooms, cellars and mailboxes are checked, the meter reading is read together with the administration or the landlord and recorded in the handover protocol. All keys belong completely on the handover list, including cellar, mailbox and copy keys.

Time Task Responsible
Before loading Read, photograph and document meter readings Tenant, together with administration
From 7:30 a.m. Dismantling, protection of floors and stairwell, loading Moving company or assigned helpers
Before departure Check old apartment, basement and mailbox Tenant
At handover Keys, handover protocol and Confirm meter readings Tenant and landlord
When moving in Place furniture in target rooms, note any damage immediately Moving team and residents
On the same day Attach name tags to the mailbox and bell, return parking card Tenant or Tenant
In the first 48 hours Take photos of new defects and report them to the landlord Tenant
Afterwards Register with the municipality and make address adjustments Every adult person or household

The following day is not a day of rest without tasks. Registration with the new residents' registration office must be completed within the statutory deadline. At theStadt Zürich ist die Online-Adressänderung frühestens 30 Tage vor dem Einzug möglich, while the reporting obligation applies from the time of the move.

The first48 hoursare important for questions of defects and liability. Scratches, damaged doors or existing defects are immediately photographed and reported in writing. Adjust household contents and liability insurance, check the forwarding and complete the online move at the post office if you haven't already done so.

Schedules according to moving type Apartment Family Office Individual furniture

A flat-rate lead time of eight to twelve weeks does not suit every move. A small apartment needs less coordination than a family household, while an office move depends primarily on IT dependencies and the desired operating window.

Moving type Lead week Booking TIXPI
1.5 room apartment with 20 to 30 boxes 4 to 6 Book transporters or helpers as soon as the date and volume have been determined
Family household with 3.5 to 4.5 rooms and school children 10 to 12 Reserve the moving team early, fix school and handover dates first
Office relocation with IT infrastructure 12 to 16 Coordinate planning with server shutdown, network and employees before booking
Individual furniture transport 2 to 3 Short-term booking possible up to 48 hours before collection, better 4 weeks for end-of-month rush before

For a small 1.5-room apartment with20 to 30 boxesa van and helpers from friends are often enough. A professional moving team is still worthwhile if heavy furniture, narrow stairs or a short handover time make the effort impractical.

Families with3.5 to 4.5 roomsand school children need the longer lead time not only because of the inventory of100+ boxes, but because of the change of school, care, administration and several people involved. The critical deadline is often not packing, but rather the coordination of all handovers.

An office move with IT infrastructure is treated as a separate project. Server shutdown, network reinstallation, security certificates and employee information need a common window. A Friday to Monday process can make sense if the company needs to be able to work again on Monday.

When transporting individual pieces of furniture,2 to 3 weeks is often sufficient. A platform can allow spontaneous bookings up to48 hoursbefore pickup, but end-of-month surges between the28. and 31.require more reserve. The dimensions, floor, lift, pickup address and assembly are crucial, not just the piece of furniture itself.

Common planning errors and how the schedule still sticks

Booking too late is the most common bottleneck. Moving and cleaning companies are often very busy, especially at the end of the month. Get offers6 to 8 weeksbefore the appointment and confirm the booking about4 weeksbeforehand. With TIXPI, digital booking can take a few minutes, but volumes and receipts must still be recorded correctly.

The delivery cleaning does not belong on the moving day. Plan it1 to 2 daysbefore handing over the apartment so that cleaning and corrections are still possible. An empty apartment is not automatically clean enough for acceptance.
