Official moving dates in Switzerland simply explained

The most common information on the topicofficial moving dates in Switzerlandis: end of March, end of June, end of September or end of December. This may be true as a rough guide, but as a binding rule it is wrong. In Switzerland there isno uniform nationwide moving date. The decisive factors are the rental agreement, the canton and sometimes even the specific municipality.

This distinction determines whether a termination is within the deadline, whether a moving company remains available and whether access even works on the desired day. Anyone who only consults a general list can therefore miss a deadline despite the supposedly correct date or unnecessarily end up in a busy moving period.

Why there is no uniform moving date in Switzerland

The “official moving date” is not a calendar entry that applies throughout Switzerland.Ordinary termination dates depend on the rental agreement as well as cantonal and municipal rules, as the overview frommovu zu den Umzugsterminen in der Schweizshows. A frequently mentioned date can therefore only serve as an initial guide.

Local dates are not the same everywhere

Many regions have traditional deadlines on which tenancies can be properly terminated. These habits have developed cantonally and locally. However, they do not automatically apply in every municipality and never replace checking your own rental agreement.

If there is a specific termination date in the contract, this is the first checkpoint. If there is no clear regulation, the usual local appointments at the place of residence are added. A date from the neighboring canton can therefore be meaningless for your own home, even though it is regularly used there.

The differences extend to the appointment logic itself.Aargau, Freiburg, Neuchâtel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Zug and ZurichFor example, we know the31. March, June 30, and September 30as classic dates. Other cantons focus more on the end of the month. In Geneva, on the other hand, there are no local termination dates. TheSchweizer Übersicht der Zügelterminesummarizes such regional differences.

Practical rule:Treat a general date like an audit note. Your date is only binding when the rental agreement, canton and municipality match.

Wrong assumptions have a direct effect

If you only look at the desired move-out date, you are missing the more important order:On what date can I cancel and what deadline must be adhered to?Therefore, check the contract first, then the cantonal orientation and finally the municipal specifics. This three-step check prevents a familiar date from being prematurely deemed binding.

A cancellation can arrive too late if the deadline is calculated backwards from the actual cancellation date and this does not apply where you live. Practical planning also becomes more difficult. Transport, cleaning, lift reservations and apartment handovers come together around a few regional deadlines. A suitable fallback window outside of these peaks can help with availability and costs, provided the contract and authorities allow it.

The federal statistics show that for SwitzerlandIn 2024 around 697,000 people moved, on average around1,900 per day. OppositeIn 2020 with around 769,000 movesthere were around72,000 people or around 9.4% fewer. TheBundesamt für Statistikdescribes the development as a historically low level. Regional peaks remain relevant for moving planning.

The decisive planning lever is therefore thekorrect regional classification of your own tenancy, supplemented by the blocking time check and realistic alternative data.

Understanding the basics and categories of moving dates

A clear distinction between the terms helps with practical planning. Alocally customary notice dateis a cut-off date established in a region on which tenancies can be terminated in accordance with the applicable rules. Acontractual dateon the other hand, is set out directly in the rental agreement and can specify the general cantonal guideline in more detail or regulate it differently.

You must not play these two levels off against each other. The contract takes precedence. If it does not provide a sufficient answer, you check the cantonal and municipal requirements. A general online list only serves as a starting point.

Quarterly and month-end dates

Withquarterly datesthe possible dates are concentrated in certain periods of the year. The classic pattern comprises31 March, 30 June and 30 Septemberas is the case in Aargau, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Zug and the Canton of Zurich, among others. In certain areas of the City of Zurich,31 Decemberis also mentioned.

Another category consists ofmonth-end dates. In Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and other cantons, the end of the month is generally relevant, except for31 December. Nevertheless, the exact municipal application and the contract remain decisive.

The difference is crucial when giving notice. A month-end model can offer more flexibility, whereas a quarterly model restricts the choice considerably. For the move itself, however, a narrower window of dates often means higher demand on the same days.

Classifying special cases correctly

Geneva is an important special case, because thereno locally customary notice datesapply. This does not mean that tenants can freely choose any date. It makes the rental agreement and the statutory requirements all the more important.

The rule can also differ within a canton. A city, an agglomeration and a rural municipality do not have to use the same model. A useful check therefore asks not only "Which canton?", but also "Which municipality and which rental agreement?".

A date is only reliable once you can derive it in writing from the contract or from the responsible authority.

Cantonal and municipal regulations in detail

The cantonal models can be roughly compared, but not generalised. The following overview shows the most important patterns from the available Swiss compilations. It does not replace a review of your specific rental agreement.

Regulatory model Example cantons Typical dates Particularity
Quarterly model Aargau, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Zug, Zurich 31 March, 30 June, 30 September The contract and the municipality may contain additional requirements
Quarterly model with municipal deviation Zurich City of Zurich mostly 31 March and 30 September, Canton of Zurich additionally 30 June The city and the canton must not be treated the same way
Month-end model Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and other cantons End of the month, except 31 December Local practice must be confirmed
Multi-level regulation Bern City and surrounding area 30 April and 31 October, outside the city often any end of month except December The municipal level is particularly important for classification
No locally customary date Geneva No general series of locally customary dates Tenancy agreement and applicable rules are key

Zurich shows why the exact location matters

In the Canton of Zurich, the designation «Zurich» alone is not enough. In the City of Zurich, 31 March and 30 September usually apply, while in theCanton of Zurich additionally 30 Juneoccurs. This difference is explicitly highlighted in theÜbersicht zu den Schweizer Zügeltagen.

If you live in the City of Zurich, you should therefore not automatically assume 30 June to be an ordinary moving date. Conversely, this date may well be relevant in a municipality within the canton. Check the exact address, not just the name of the canton.

Bern works with two levels

Bern likewise makes the municipal distinction visible. Forthe city and surrounding area, typically30 April and 31 Octoberare cited. For municipalities outside the city, in addition, oftenthe end of every month except Decemberis mentioned. TheBeratung zu Schweizer Umzugsdatenthus shows why a short cantonal list is not sufficient for Bern.

In Basel-Stadt, the end-of-month logic is a good starting point. If you are moving there, you should check the contractual clause and its local application. For organisational questions relating to a move in Basel-Stadt, theBasel-Stadt-Übersicht von TIXPIcan also serve as a practical supplement.

The rule is the same for all models:First read the contract, then check the municipality, and only then book the transport. This prevents a supposedly suitable moving day from failing to work legally or logistically.

How to check your personal moving date in three steps

A reliable check does not require complicated research, but it must be done in the right order. Don't start with a search engine, start with your tenancy agreement.

Step 1: Read the contract in full

Look for the sections on termination, notice period, termination dates and early return of the property. Note not only the date, but also the required form of notice and the point in time by which it must have reached the landlord.

Pay attention to wording such as end of quarter, end of month, locally customary dates or specific exclusions. If several people have signed the tenancy agreement, also check who has to sign the notice of termination. If anything is unclear, a written enquiry to the property management is safer than verbal information.

Step 2: Compare canton and municipality

Assign your address to the applicable set of rules. For the City of Zurich, you should in particular check31 March and 30 September. In the rest of the Canton of Zurich,30 Juneis added. For Bern, compare the situation with30 April and 31 Octoberin the city and surrounding area, or with the end-of-month rule that is frequently cited outside the city.

The municipality can provide additional information on local customs, public holidays or access permits. For administrative steps relating to a change of residence, you will find suitable organisational support atUmzug bei der Gemeinde melden.

Step 3: Have the date confirmed in writing

Record the outcome in a short checklist:

  1. Contract:Which termination date is expressly stated in the tenancy agreement?
  2. Deadline:By when must the notice of termination have reached the landlord?
  3. Location:Which rule applies in the canton and municipality?
  4. Confirmation:Is there written information from the property management or the responsible authority?
  5. Organisation:Are transport, handover, cleaning and access all possible on the same date?

This allows you to distinguish therechtlich möglichen Termin → legally permissible date Let me translate each segment. legally permissible datefrom thepractically suitable moving day. Both must match before you make a binding booking.

Planning restricted hours, public holidays and driving bans correctly

A correctly determined moving date is no guarantee of a smooth move. Public holidays, weekends, night-time hours, local noise regulations and restricted access can complicate the process. In densely built-up neighbourhoods in particular, the transport needs not just a date, but a permissible time window.

Public holidays and weekends

Cantonal public holidays are not the same everywhere. A date can be treated differently at your old and your new place of residence. So check both municipalities if you are moving across a cantonal border.

On Sundays, work, noise and lorry journeys may be restricted. Nor is a Saturday automatically trouble-free, since house rules, local quiet hours or access restrictions may apply. Ask the property management, the municipality and, where applicable, the responsible road traffic office early on.

Night-time driving bans primarily affect transports with larger vehicles. Different rules may apply to a private small van than to a lorry, but this distinction should not be left to guesswork. The vehicle used, the road and the municipality determine what is practically feasible.

Access and building entry

Besides road traffic, the lift, inner courtyard, gateways and building entrances must also be taken into account. A property management company may set its own requirements for protecting the flooring, using the lift or occupying an access route.

A free date in the calendar is not automatically a free slot on the street.

So check the following before booking:

  • Public holidays:Are the municipalities of origin and destination normally accessible on moving day?
  • Driving bans:Is the planned vehicle allowed to use the route at the desired time?
  • Quiet hours:Do the house rules and local regulations permit carrying, drilling or setting things up?
  • Access:Are there bollards, construction sites, one-way systems or a height restriction?
  • Permit:Does a parking space, a no-stopping zone or an access route need to be reserved?

The official calendars of the municipalities, cantonal authorities and road traffic offices are the most reliable sources. If in doubt, state the specific street and type of vehicle rather than simply asking about a "moving ban".

Avoiding the peak season and optimising costs and availability

An official moving date is not automatically the cheapest choice. In Switzerland, moves are concentrated on a few classic key dates and in a season that is under considerably greater pressure. According toSchweizer Marktdaten zu Umzügenthe peak season runs from July to September. July and August each recordover 90,000 moves across Switzerland. From May to September there are alsomore than 55% of all moves.

For planning purposes, the distribution within your region therefore matters more than a Switzerland-wide average. High demand can arise on individual notice and moving days, even if the overall market is weaker. The key date acts like a bottleneck: many households need a vehicle, helpers and available time slots all at the same time.

An alternative time window instead of the key date

If your rental agreement allows several dates, consider a datebefore or after the classic end of the month or quarter. A weekday outside the periods of strongest demand may be easier to secure than a Friday or Saturday right on the key date. The prerequisite remains that the notice period, the handover of the flat and any cantonal or municipal requirements permit this date.

Allow for a time buffer between handover and transport. An earlier transport, temporary storage or the gradual handover of individual items reduces the pressure on the tightest moving day. If you're moving on your own, helpers, vehicle and return time all have to line up.

Book early and compare options

Once the three-step check has confirmed your personal date, obtain several quotes for vehicle, team size and date. Always compare the same scope of services. Floor, lift, distance, dismantling, assembly and access affect the workload and therefore comparability.

Planning decision:First check how flexible the date is. Then compare the type of transport, the scope of services and any additional services.

How to handle closed roads and permits for your move

A narrow old town lane, a construction site or a busy stretch of road can block moving day even though your date is legally fine. A permit does not automatically replace the necessary signage. You need to clarify who closes off the area, which vehicles are permitted and how access for residents is maintained.

Contacting the right office

Start with the municipality where the moving vehicle is to be parked. Depending on the location, the residents' registration office, civil engineering office, police or road traffic office is responsible. For private driveways or courtyards, the property management or owners are also involved.

State the following in your request:

  • Address:Start and destination address with access details as precise as possible.
  • Date and time:Planned period for arrival, loading and departure.
  • Vehicle:Vehicle type, approximate size and parking space required.
  • Situation:Lift, stairwell, courtyard, construction site, bollards or clearance height.
  • Documents:Rental confirmation, permit form or plan, if required.

The municipality will tell you whether a no-parking zone, a parking space reservation or an additional traffic order is required. Responsibilities and lead times vary locally. So don't rely on the deadline of another municipality.

Signage and monitoring

An approved area often has to be visibly signposted. Do not put up signs on your own initiative if the municipality or an appointed service is responsible for this. Check before moving day that the zone remains clear, and document the signage.

For theReservation eines Parkplatzes für den Umzugyou can prepare the organisational details and then verify them with the municipality. If a road is closed due to a construction site, you should also contact the site management or the civil engineering office, as an approved parking space may otherwise be practically unusable.

In the old town, the vehicle may require special access. Where there are bollards or access systems, clarify who opens the access. If you're moving at the weekend, limited counter opening hours can make a last-minute solution more difficult. So arrange the permit, keys and contact persons before the actual transport day.

Quick overview of calendars and official bodies for moving planning

Swiss moving dates do not follow a uniform calendar. This overview shows typical regional reference points, but replaces neither the rental agreement nor confirmation from the municipality.

Region or model Relevant guidance
Aargau, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Zug, Zurich 31 March, 30 June, 30 September
City of Zurich Usually 31 March and 30 September
Canton of Zurich outside the city Additionally 30 June
City and surrounding area of Bern 30 April and 31 October
Municipalities outside the city of Bern Often the end of every month except December
Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Appenzell Usually the end of the month, except 31 December
Geneva No customary local notice dates

The regional overview of theZügeltermine nach Kanton und Gemeindeis suitable for a preliminary check. For reliable planning, a clear sequence is enough:

  1. Rental agreement:Mark the notice date and notice period.
  2. Municipality:Check local regulations, public holidays and any blackout periods.
  3. Property management:Have deviations or unclear information confirmed in writing.

After that, clarify access, no-parking zones and vehicle restrictions with the responsible roads authority. Only once these points are settled should you book the transport definitively. This way you'll recognise early on whether an alternative time slot makes more sense than a date that's in high demand.

Which authorities are responsible for what

Themunicipal administrationprovides information on local dates, registration and deregistration as well as municipal restrictions. For general tenancy law questions, thecantonal housing officeor a responsible tenancy advice office can help. Driving bans, access routes and traffic regulations fall, depending on the case, within the remit of theroad traffic office, police or civil engineering department.

Keep written responses together with your rental agreement. Calendars and online widgets only provide guidance. Public holidays, construction work and temporary road closures can change practical planning.
